• At Des Moines International Airport, February is the snowiest month: 10.2 of a normal year's 36.5 inches.⁶

Because Des Moines picks dinner and errands on a phone screen first, and a feed that went quiet after the State Fair looks shut by MLK weekend. Of the city's 90,105 households, 92.0% own a smartphone, close to 82,900 homes (our arithmetic).⁷

Growth is slow inside city limits. The July 2025 estimate of 212,086 sits 1,946 below the April 2020 base, a dip near 0.9% (our arithmetic).¹ Polk County did add 3,035 residents from 2024 to 2025, while the city slipped by 191 over the same year (our arithmetic).¹ A city shop's best bet is the regulars already nearby.

Those regulars have a long list of small options. Out of 13,890 Polk County establishments, 7,008, roughly half, run with fewer than five employees (our arithmetic).⁸ Another 38,698 businesses have no payroll at all.³

Describe the shop once, and Presly fills the weeks ahead.

Median pay for a Des Moines-area marketing specialist works out to $6,381.67 a month before payroll taxes and benefits, against $39 to $159 for Presly (our arithmetic). Federal job codes include no "social media manager." The closest BLS group covers marketing specialists and market research analysts, who earned a $76,580 median salary, or $36.82 an hour, across the Des Moines-West Des Moines metro in May 2025.⁹ For the metro's PR specialists, the median was $70,660.⁹

Why it works: the Iowa Wild schedule lists the Texas Stars at home on Thursday, December 31, at 6 p.m., and the team's promotion calendar bills the night as its New Year's Eve Bash at Casey's Center.¹⁴¹⁵¹⁰ New Year's Day is a paid state holiday under Iowa law, and Des Moines Public Schools stays on winter break through January 1, so plenty of people can make a late night of it.¹⁶¹⁷ Maid-Rite's own history traces its loose meat sandwich on a steamed bun to 1926, and Travel Iowa calls it "the iconic loose-meat sandwich."¹⁸¹⁹ Polk County has 397 limited-service restaurants chasing the same pregame crowd, and December nights at the airport average 19.5°F, so a hot sandwich before the game needs little convincing.⁸⁶

Why it works: the Greater Des Moines Partnership sets the 2026 winter market for November 20 to 22 at Capital Square, with gifts, wreaths and ornaments for sale and free admission.²⁰ The Partnership's East Village page lists "independent book stores" among the district's shops and puts the neighborhood on the river's east bank, a short walk from the market.²¹ November highs at the airport average 48.3°F and slide to 35.9°F in December. That's reading weather.⁶ Polk County's 31 gift, novelty and souvenir stores, 16 of them with fewer than five employees, chase the same holiday shoppers, so a well-timed post helps a small shop get noticed.⁸

We checked these on October 18, 2026: state holidays against Iowa Code section 1C.2 (the weekday math is ours), school dates against the Des Moines Public Schools 2026-2027 calendar, and events against each organizer.¹⁶¹⁷ Where 2027 dates aren't announced, we note the usual timing instead.

January. Friday, January 1, brings a state holiday for New Year's Day and the final day of the district's winter break.¹⁶¹⁷ The Iowa Wild are home January 4, 13, 15 and 16, and schools close for MLK Day on January 18.¹⁴¹⁷ Coldest month: a 30.9°F normal high and 29.5 nights at or below freezing.⁶ Post idea: "lot's plowed, soup's on."

February. The Wild have a Saturday home date on February 13, and schools hold a professional development day on February 15.²²¹⁷ Snowfall peaks at 10.2 inches.⁶ Post idea: snow-day comfort food or a "warm up with a book" table.

March. District spring break runs March 15 to 19.¹⁷ The Iowa Cubs start their first home series against Toledo at Principal Park on March 30.²³ Post idea: opening-week lunch near the ballpark.

April. The 117th Drake Relays run April 21 to 24 at Drake Stadium.²⁴ Rain climbs to 4.02 inches and highs reach 62.0°F.⁶ Post idea: Relays-week hours near campus.

May. The Downtown Farmers' Market usually opens in early May; in 2026 its Saturdays began May 2 in the Historic Court District, with 305 vendors.²⁵ Memorial Day is May 31.¹⁶ Post idea: "find us after the market."

June. District classes end June 3.¹⁷ The Des Moines Arts Festival brings 195 artists to Western Gateway Park June 25 to 27, 2027, with free admission.²⁶ June is the wettest month, 5.26 inches.⁶ Post idea: a rain-or-shine lunch near the artists' tents.

July. July 4 lands on a Sunday in 2027, so state offices take Monday, July 5 (our calendar check).¹⁶ The Iowa Cubs host St. Paul on the Fourth.²³ July is hottest: an 85.6°F normal high and 8.7 days reaching 90°F.⁶ Post idea: a cooler-pack order for the holiday.

August. The 2027 Iowa State Fair runs 11 days, August 12 to 22; the 2026 fair set an attendance record of 1,218,834.²⁷ Post idea: fair-week hours and a quick lunch on the way to the grounds.

September. The state's Labor Day holiday falls on September 6, 2027.¹⁶ The World Food & Music Festival filled Western Gateway Park August 28 to 30, 2026, with over 55 food vendors from 29 countries.²⁸ Post idea: "patio season isn't over."

October. The IMT Des Moines Marathon was set for Sunday, October 18, 2026, and the Downtown Farmers' Market wraps its 2026 season on Saturday, October 31.²⁹²⁵ Post idea: race-morning breakfast and the last market Saturday.

November. Veterans Day, November 11, is a state holiday.¹⁶ The Wild host Grand Rapids November 13 and 14.¹⁴ The Downtown Winter Farmers' Market runs November 20 to 22, and Thanksgiving plus the Friday after, November 26 and 27, close state offices and district schools.²⁰¹⁶¹⁷ Post idea: a market-weekend gift guide and long-weekend hours.

December. The Wild play eight home games, among them December 18 and 19 against Lehigh Valley and December 29 and 31 against Texas.¹¹¹⁴ The East Village Holiday Promenade usually fills evenings from late November into December; the 2025 edition ran November 21 to December 19, 5 to 8 p.m.³⁰ Winter break begins December 21.¹⁷ Post idea: free gift wrap, sandwich trays for office parties and a December 31 pregame seating.

Spread each big date over three posts. From November 13 to January 16, Des Moines gets at least 14 Iowa Wild home games, the three-day winter market at Capital Square and the long Thanksgiving weekend.¹⁴²⁰¹⁶ The team's promotion calendar calls the December 31 game its New Year's Eve Bash.¹⁵

Cold, snowy winters, hot summers and a soggy late spring. The figures come from 1991-2020 normals at Des Moines International Airport.⁶

• Snow season, November to March: 34.6 of the yearly 36.5 inches, about 95% (our arithmetic). December to February alone brings 27.5 inches, and February leads at 10.2.
• Real cold: 127.9 nights a year drop to freezing or lower and 10.4 fall below zero, while on 45.5 days the high never gets past freezing. Hot food, indoor plans and plain "we're open" posts earn their spot.
• Heavy snow: 11.0 days a year bring at least an inch. Closing? Trade the day's post for a two-line note and update your Google hours for that date.³¹
• Rain: May and June bring 5.24 and 5.26 inches, the wettest stretch; January is driest at 1.08.
• Heat: 22.0 days a year hit 90°F, and 18.9 of them fall in June, July and August, about 86% (our arithmetic). Post in the morning or evening on hot days, and lead with shade and cold drinks.

Use the names people here actually say. The Greater Des Moines Partnership splits downtown into Gray's Lake, the Historic Court District, the Historic East Village, the Market District, Sherman Hill and Western Gateway.³²

• Historic East Village: from the Des Moines River east to the Iowa Capitol, "walkable, cool and full of character," with boutiques, a plant store and independent bookstores.²¹
• Historic Court District: home of the Saturday Downtown Farmers' Market, May through October.²⁵
• Western Gateway: the park that hosts the Arts Festival and the World Food & Music Festival.²⁶²⁸
• Beaverdale: famous for "Beaverdale Brick" homes; Beaverdale Books hosts the DSM Book Festival, and there's a yearly fall festival.³²
• Ingersoll and North of Grand: century-old houses and a shopping and dining strip called The Avenues.³²
• Highland Park and Oak Park: "ever-growing," in the Partnership's words, with local spots in walking range and the Northside Market.³²
• Drake: on the edge of downtown, around the stadium that hosts the Relays.³²²⁴
• South side: Southwestern Hills, Watrous Heights and Gray's Lake lie south of downtown, and so does the airport.³²⁶
• Valley Junction, West Des Moines: a renovated railroad district with "more than 120 retail businesses."³³

"Two blocks from the Capitol" beats any slogan. Put landmarks in your Presly business description and captions will use them.

Post in the language your customers use at the counter. Across Des Moines, 21.9% of residents 5 and up use another language at home, and 10.9% say their English is less than "very well."⁵ Some 16.3% of residents are Hispanic or Latino, and 14.2% were born abroad.⁴⁵

The city's figures in Census table C16001:

• Spanish: 22,907 speakers, roughly 11.5% of the 5-and-up population; 10,502 of them, about 45.8%, report limited English (our arithmetic).¹³
• Arabic: 1,945 speakers, 993 of them with limited English, about 51.1% (our arithmetic).¹³
• Vietnamese: 1,869 speakers; 1,195, about 63.9%, report limited English (our arithmetic).¹³
• Slavic languages (Russian, Polish and others), grouped: 1,391 speakers.¹³
• Other Asian and Pacific Island languages, grouped: 6,657 speakers, which the table doesn't break out.¹³

Setting it in Presly. One language per business: Vietnamese for a pho shop, Arabic for a bakery, Spanish for a taquería. The list of 30-plus also covers Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Filipino, and Chinese in Simplified or Traditional script.

Here's our opinion, drawn from Polk County's 2023 County Business Patterns, on which trades gain most from regular posting. It's a view, not a promise.⁸

1. Food and drink: 1,157 restaurants and bars, about 8.3% of all establishments (our arithmetic), counting 404 full-service restaurants, 397 limited-service spots, 131 coffee and snack bars, 138 bars, 22 food trucks, 11 retail bakeries and 7 breweries.
2. Salons and personal care: 192 beauty salons (136 with under five employees), 64 nail salons, 66 spas and similar shops, and 10 barbers.
3. Health and fitness: 175 dentists, 145 chiropractors, 109 therapy offices and 89 gyms and studios courting January joiners.
4. Car care: 253 repair shops, including 124 general garages, 47 body shops and 44 car washes, which get busier once the roads are salted.
5. Home trades: 907 specialty contractors, among them 141 plumbing and heating firms, 114 electricians and 63 roofers, plus 182 landscapers and 178 remodelers.
6. Real estate: 316 agent and broker offices; 291, about 92%, have under five employees (our arithmetic).

Sample week for a Beaverdale coffee shop (example only). Monday: Presly writes up a maple latte and illustrates it. Wednesday: the pastry case photo you took at 7 a.m. goes out. Friday: Saturday's hours before the Wild game, plus a link for group table requests. Sunday: a new Google review. A Growth user taps for a suggested reply and tweaks it; a Pro user finds the draft ready when the review opens.

Three or four social posts and one Google post each week is the rhythm we'd keep here. No platform publishes an official target, so choose a pace you'll still manage in February. Google moves profile posts without a date range into its archive after six months, which means a June Arts Festival post is gone before the first snow.¹²²⁶ Add a few extras around Wild home dates, the winter market, Thanksgiving week and fair season.¹⁴²⁰²⁷

Yes, if you're on Growth or Pro. The booking page comes with a compact link to paste into the bio, to end a caption with, or to add on Google yourself in your profile's booking links area. Google's help page allows as many as 10 links in each category, with one marked "Business preferred."³⁴ Visitors choose an open time and submit a request.
